Hello!!!!

zumba-pic3

Hi everyone and welcome to my blog ‘Fitness Is My Therapy’.  My name is Twanna and I’m a fitness professional who hopes to inspire others to live a healthy lifestyle by sharing my journey.

I will write about the benefits of exercising, nutrition, my struggles and health issues.  I would love to connect with other fitness professionals.  Along with anyone who has an interest in living a healthy lifestyle.

To be honest I’m not quite sure what I want to accomplish by blogging.  For now I just want to connect with others with the same interest and I hope I can inspire them with my journey.

Yes! I Got My Back Cracked!!

Today’s blog is about my visit to see a chiropractor.

A chiropractor is a health care professional who focuses on identifying and treatment of neuromuscular disorders by manual adjustment of the spine.

Yes getting your back cracked!!!  LOL

I know a lot of people are intimidated by going to see a chiropractor and this is not for everyone.  So let me start off by saying, I’m not a doctor or a medical professional I just want to share my experience of how a chiropractor has helped me.

As a fitness professional I should have been to see a chiropractor a long time ago. But I procrastinated for a couple of reasons.  Mainly because I was scared that the doctor might accidentally break my neck when he/she cracked it…lol

Finally I gave in when I was experiencing a sharp pain in my shoulder every time I did strength training exercises for it.  I stopped taking one on my favorite group fitness classes because of it:((  For the life of me I could not figure out why this was happening.  I would do stretching exercises and use the form roller on my back.  But every time I go back to the class regularly the pain would come back.

One day a friend of mine told me I needed to go to a chiropractor while we were working out together.  She told me one of my arms was working harder than the other and a chiropractor will fix the problem for me.

After some research I decided to go The Joint Chiropractic which is a short walk away from my house.  My experience was great and even after my first visit my shoulder pain disappeared and I felt lighter.  The doctor even cracked my neck and it was not that bad…lol…Below is a picture of my recommended visitation plan so I can get properly aligned and remain that way:)))

After my first visit I had to take a hot bath with Epsom salt and place an ice pack on my neck so I would not be sore the next day.  I followed the Dr.’s orders and I felt fine the next day and I still feel great.

To make a long story short going to a chiropractor was one of the best decisions I ever made:)))  And I highly recommend going to one.  Until next time:))

I Did it!!!

I’m so excited I passed my NASM Personal Training Certification exam on 10/14/17!!!  Yay I’m a Certified Personal Trainer now!!!  The exam was tough but I did it.  A lot of time was spent studying and I had to put writing on my blog on hold for a bit.  Even though I missed blogging it was worth it.

Since I’ve been gone for a while there is a lot of reading I need to catch up on.  I miss reading your blogs and I’m glad I’m back:))

Thank you,

Chronic Illnesses Suck

stress

I developed two chronic illnesses due to stress.  Three years ago I worked in a career I hated mainly for the money.  I had bills to pay, children to raise and a home to maintain.

Sounds familiar???

Yes I know this life!!!

Anyway by working so long in a career I hated took a toll on me physically and mentally. I developed High Blood Pressure and Proctitis caused my Ulcerative Colitis.  Both illnesses require me to live a healthy lifestyle and to keep my stress level low.

Currently I’m still learning how to coop with both my illness. Whenever I have a flare up I know that I need to rest and take extra care of my body.

I’m grateful that God has given me the knowledge and opportunity to work in a field that I love.  By being a Group Fitness Instructor I get to help other people live a healthy lifestyle and that makes me happy:)

Lemon Water

Hello Everyone!!!

I hope everyone is doing well:)  Welcome back to my journey.  If you haven’t already please read my previous blog called, “A Work In Progress”.  This way you will understand what this blog is about.

I’m on a journey to lose 18 lbs and I’m working on changing my bad eating habits and into good ones. The first thing I did was replace my morning coffee with warm lemon water.

lemon-waterLemon water is known to do the following:

  1. Boost Digestion System
  2. Boost Energy
  3. Naturally Flush System
  4. Maintain Healthy Weight
  5. Healthy Skin
  6. Provide The Body With Hydrating Electrolytes
  7. Fight Respiratory Infections
  8. Regulate Blood Pressure
  9. Reduce Depression And Anxiety Symptoms

After only one day of drinking warm lemon water. I noticed a big difference physically and mentally.  I had less morning mucus and more energy.  I felt lighter and ready to conquer my day.  My only problem is that the lemon water taste bitter and I still craved the taste of my coffee.  Yeah I know coffee is bitter too but not the way I made it. I put a flavored creamier in my coffee and topped it off with whip cream…Yum!!! Therefore I would still have a cup of coffee after I ate my breakfast.  After a couple of days of drinking coffee after the lemon water and breakfast my stomach would instantly start to hurt.  Now that gave me a really good reason not to drink coffee anymore.  I had my last cup of coffee on 11/10/16 and I feel great.

Yes!!!!  I accomplished changing one bad habit into a good habit.

Thank you for reading my blog until next time.

A Work In Progress

Hello Everyone,

For as long as I can remember my weight has always gone up and down. One minute I’m the perfect weight and then the next minute I’m not. Through out the years whenever I gained weight I would lose it quickly by exercising and eating right.  Then I get satisfied with how I look, go back to my old habits and gain it right back.  It felt like I was always dieting and being insecure about my size.

Below is an example of how I looked when I gained and lost weight from 2013 to 2016:

Now that I’m older the weight does not come off as easy and I’m not consistent with my nutrition as I should be.  My problem is that I never learned the art of maintaining a healthy weight.

IT’S TIME TO CHANGE THAT!!!!

Currently I weigh 168 lbs and I want to be 150 lbs or less. In order to do that I learned I must gradually make changes to my nutrition so it can be a lifestyle opposed to a diet.

OK now that I know this I need to come up with a game plan:))  After I do some research and planning I will be back to let you know how I’m going to reach my goal.  Until next time:)

Are Swim Caps Helpful???

img_20150910_095432Hello Everyone!!!

Recently I learned something new.  Wearing a swim cap is not good while working out in the pool when the water is warm.  It impedes the body’s ability to dissipate heat causing the body to overheat.  I know this may seem tacky but to protect the hair a shower cap is an appropriate alternative.

Now on the other hand if the pool at the gym you go to is cold, wearing a swim cap is perfect.  Since most of your body heat escapes through your head, wearing a swim cap will hold in your body heat.  Therefore keeping you warmer longer and it will prevent cold water from directly touching your head.

Personally those caps never worked for me.  They are too tight to get on my head.  The instructions that usually come with the cap advises, ‘it is best to wet the hair first and then put the cap on’.  That’s not going to work for me. The purpose of me wearing the swim cap is not to get my hair wet.  The best option for me is to put my hair in a high bun or tie a silk scarf around my head and put a hat on.

In my opinion swim caps benefit people with long thin hair that swim or workout in cold water.  If you have short, curly, or thick hair and you workout or swim in warm water find another alternative.

Daily Prompt: Daring

To be daring is to go out there and do it.

Even if you are not sure on how to do it.

Do it anyway.

If you can dream it, you can do it.

If you can visualize it, you can do it.

Anything is possible wants you set your mind to it.

Be daring and go after what you want.

Just do it!!!!
